Frequently asked questions
Everything you need to evaluate Garu for your store, from how try-on looks on the page to how we handle shopper photos.
Product
What is 360° Virtual Try-On?
Garu's 360° virtual try-on lets customers see how clothes look on them from every angle: front, back, and side. Unlike traditional try-on that shows just one view, our technology generates multiple angles so shoppers can see the full picture, just like trying on in a store.
How fast is the try-on generation?
Our AI generates photorealistic try-on images in 10 to 15 seconds. While the image loads, shoppers can continue browsing your store, keeping them engaged and increasing session time. The 360° rotation takes about 20 to 30 seconds, with a smooth progress indicator. Most shoppers try on 3 to 5 items per session, dramatically increasing time on site.
Can customers try multiple items?
Yes. This is one of our biggest engagement drivers. Customers can try on as many items as they want: t-shirts, dresses, jackets, sunglasses, and more. They can mix and match different colors, compare styles, and build complete outfits. This 'virtual dressing room' experience keeps shoppers on your site 2.5× longer and dramatically increases purchase confidence.
What types of clothing work best?
Garu works with all fashion items: tops, bottoms, dresses, jackets, outerwear, sunglasses, and accessories. Customers can mix and match items, try a jacket in navy vs. black, pair different tops with the same pants, or build complete outfit combinations. Our AI understands fabric textures, drape, and lighting for photorealistic results.
How does AI sizing work?
Garu's sizing model is trained on real fit data, what shoppers actually wore, kept and returned across brands, not on body measurements pulled from a photo. The shopper tells us (or imports from their account) the sizes they already wear at brands they trust, and we map that fit profile to your store's size chart. Every recommendation comes with a confidence score, so shoppers see when the model is certain and when to size up. This reduces the 42% of fashion returns that are size-related, without ever asking the shopper for a tape measure or a body scan.
Does virtual try-on actually reduce returns?
Try-on alone reduces style-driven returns by setting accurate visual expectations before purchase. But industry surveys consistently attribute roughly 42% of fashion returns to size and fit — and a try-on image without a size answer does not address those. That is why Garu pairs every try-on with a per-garment size recommendation: the visual handles "will I like it?", the sizing handles "which one do I buy?", and together they address both major return drivers before checkout.
What is the difference between virtual try-on and a size recommendation?
Virtual try-on answers "how does this look on me?" with a generated image of the shopper wearing the garment. A size recommendation answers "which size should I buy?" with a specific size mapped to the store's chart. They solve different problems — style confidence versus fit confidence — and most tools on the market do only one. Garu does both in the same widget, so the recommendation can be shown on the shopper's body rather than just asserted.
What is a virtual fitting room?
A virtual fitting room is the full experience, not a single feature: the shopper sets up a profile once, then gets sizing and try-on on every enabled product they browse — the way a real fitting room works across everything you stock. A one-product try-on demo is a novelty; a fitting room persists across the catalogue, which is what makes shoppers compare items instead of abandoning after one.
What does a good virtual try-on look like?
Three tests separate a real render from a flat photo swap: the garment keeps its actual fabric, drape and proportions instead of being pasted over the photo; the body reflects the shopper's own height, weight and shape rather than the sample model; and there is more than one angle — the back view is where fit surprises hide. Garu renders front and back, with garment texture, seams and colour carried from your product photography.
Setup & integration
How do I set up or install Garu?
Installation takes about 10 minutes. Install Garu from the Shopify App Store, select which products to enable, and the try-on button automatically appears on your product pages. No coding or theme modifications required.
Which platforms do you support?
Garu is built natively for Shopify and Shopify Plus. We also offer custom integrations for headless storefronts and bespoke checkouts on Garu Plus. Contact us if you run on a different platform and we will scope a fit together.
Will it match my brand?
Yes. The try-on button, modal, colors, fonts and call-to-action wording inherit from your store. Growth and Garu Plus include white-label customization so the experience reads as part of your brand, not a third-party widget.
Will Garu slow down my store?
No. Try-on rendering runs on Garu's infrastructure, not in your storefront, so your product pages do not carry a heavy client-side payload. The widget is a lightweight embed loaded through Shopify's theme app-embed system, and nothing touches your checkout.
Can I enable try-on for only some products or collections?
Yes. You choose which products and collections have try-on enabled, per product or per collection, from the Garu dashboard. A common rollout is to start with the highest-return categories — denim, outerwear, tailoring — measure the effect, then widen.
Does Garu work with my existing size charts?
Yes — Garu reads the size charts and variants you already have. Recommendations come back in the size labels you actually sell (S/M/L, US 4, W32, EU 38), and per-collection charts are honoured rather than flattened into a store-wide default. There is no measurement spreadsheet to fill in before you can switch it on.

How does Garu compare to other Shopify try-on apps?
The short version: most try-on apps stop at the image, and most sizing apps stop at a chart. Garu is built as one product — photoreal try-on, front and back, plus a per-garment size recommendation with a confidence score. We published an honest comparison of the main options, including where budget tools are the better buy, at garu.ai/blog/best-shopify-virtual-try-on-apps.
What results should I expect?
We deliberately do not promise a universal uplift number — results depend on your catalogue, traffic and return profile. The honest method: enable Garu on your ten highest-return products, compare add-to-cart rate for sessions that used the widget against sessions that did not, and check size-related return rates on those products after a full return cycle. The dashboard shows the funnel per product so the measurement is yours, in your own data.
Privacy & data
Is customer data secure and private?
Yes. Customer photos are encrypted in transit and at rest, processed only to generate the try-on image, and automatically deleted after 24 hours. We never use photos to train AI models. GDPR and CCPA compliant.
Where is data processed?
Data is processed in our SOC 2-aligned cloud environment in the United States and the European Union. Garu Plus customers can request region-locked processing for compliance reasons.
Are shopper photos used to train AI models?
No, never. Photos are used solely to generate the try-on the shopper asked for, then deleted automatically within 24 hours. They are not retained, not shared, and not used for model training — this is a hard policy, not a setting.
Is Garu GDPR and CCPA compliant?
Yes. Photos are processed with consent for a single stated purpose, encrypted in transit and at rest, and deleted within 24 hours. EU traffic can be processed in the EU, and we support data-subject requests. Merchants on Garu Plus can additionally request region-locked processing.
